Interns wanted for research on emotional memories across cultures [CLOSED]

Do you have a passion for research and would you like to interview participants about an emotional life event? Then apply for an internship at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).

The Amsterdam Laboratory for Legal Psychology (ALLP) at the VU Criminology Department is looking for enthusiastic, communicative and meticulous interns to join the Beyond WEIRD Witnesses research project led by Associate Professor Dr. Annelies Vredeveldt. This project investigates eyewitness testimony in cross-cultural contexts.

We are looking for about 3-4 interns to assist for 1-2 days a week with an experiment involving interviews about emotional life events. The aim of the experiment is to compare how people from different cultural backgrounds describe such events. Under the supervision of PhD candidate Gabi de Bruïne, the interns will recruit suitable Western European participants, conduct the interviews in English (always in pairs, with another intern), and transcribe the recorded interviews. Please note that the position involves hearing emotional stories from participants. The research team will have regular check-ins to monitor your well- being during the project.

We are looking for candidates who are currently enrolled in or have recently completed a Master’s programme in Psychology, Criminology or another related field of study who:

  • have excellent knowledge of written and spoken English;
  • have clear and empathetic communication skills;
  • have basic knowledge or a keen interest in psychology;
  • can work independently and in a well-organized manner;
  • are flexible with their time and have good time management skills;
  • are creative;
  • have good study results;
  • any training or experience in (clinical or investigative) interviewing is a plus.

The proposed starting time is February 2024, but there is some flexibility. Interns need to be available one or two days per week for the duration of five months. Interns can be rewarded with either ECTS for your study programme, or with a modest work placement allowance.
